Mountain Republic

This short film is part of Karpo Aćimović Godina's experimental and documentary work in 1970s Yugoslav cinema. It extends his interest in regional identities, minorities, and the visual traces left by different cultures on Yugoslav territory. The film offers a journey through examples of architecture, decor, and objects related to Islamic tradition in the former Yugoslavia, such as mosques, ornamental elements, and calligraphy. It explores how this art is embedded in the region's history and in the daily lives of the communities that produced it. It is an observational film, without a dramatic plot, functioning primarily as a "visual essay" on the material culture of Islam in a Balkan context. The tone is analytical and contemplative, closer to a cultural study or a poetic inventory.

A new teacher - Marina - arrives in a small Pomak village in the late 1960s. She is a woman trying to live and think independently. Marina finds herself in a world unknown to her, at once pure and immaculate, but with the signs of the deformation of natural life that is typical of the whole country. After meeting the Doctor, Bai Mnogoznai, Mariana, the mayor, the internationalist Yosko, she discovers that each resists authority in their own way. And when the government starts changing the non-Bulgarian names of the Pomak villagers, the heroine realizes she is in a prison - with high mountains, forests, rivers - a prison of tragic beauty.

And this is exactly the life of furniture shop owners Ivana and Vaclav Strnadovi, 2 characters that a director Helena Trestíková follows with her camera as of the year 1980 within a project The Marriage Story. Her new feature documentary about Strnad family is linked to TV films from this cycle, but most importantly it shows further shocking twists, that life brought to the couple and their children.
