Shepherds

A look at the lives of the nomadic Gowli community of Goa, India. Their primary occupation is that of a shepherd. One such person leads a peaceful and idyllic life. It takes a turn when his son becomes an architect and decides to live in the city.

Fictionalized from a true story, this docu-drama takes us on a journey through Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul and into the lives of Brazilian gauchos. Beautifully shot landscapes form the backdrop for a simple story of friendship and tolerance between Govinda and John, as Govinda explores his attraction to his fellow cowboy.

An old shepherd lives his last days in a quiet medieval village perched high on the hills of Calabria, at the southernmost tip of Italy. He herds goats under skies that most villagers have deserted long ago. He is sick, and believes to find his medicine in the dust he collects on the church floor, which he drinks in his water every day.

Qodrat, also eleven years old, becomes the subject of gossip when his mother remarries an old man with two wives. Qodrat roams alone in the most isolated parts of the mountains, where he meets Sediqa and they become friends.

Only she can climb the nearby mountains to a cave high up, whence a mysterious blue light glows when the moon is full. Many young men of the village have died trying to follow her. She is driven out of town, and takes to living in the mountains. Eventually she shares the secret of the blue light with one man, and he betrays it.

Giacomo Meyerbeer's pastoral opera,based on a Breton tale, is the tale of DINORAH who has gone mad because her bridegroom Hoël has disappeared during their wedding. This production, performed as part of Théâtre Impérial de Compiegne's purpose of reviving obscure French opera, is the only version of 'Dinorah' available on DVD, but it is a great production! The painterly pastoral settings and décor and rustic costumes are very easy on the eye. Opera traditionalists who dislike modern stagings will be delighted to know that this is a traditional production. Pierre Jourdan's stage direction is charming and always involving, never once falling into static movements or gestures, gratuitous distaste and irrelevance. Chechnya, February 1944. A Wolf kills one of the sheep owned by two poor brothers who then start hunting the animal. They run, jump and sneak through the lonely snow-covered countryside. Biting cold, danger and toil everywhere. People do not live in this winterly realm, they survive; sometimes by mere chance: While they are away hunting the wolf, the two brothers evade the deportation of their entire village by Soviet authorities, accompanied by many casualties. Again, they follow a trail - only instead of a wolf’s trail, they now follow one of footsteps and blood. The hostile mountains and dangerous nature, which seem to hold no love for men, suddenly appear in a different light: It is man himself who holds the least love for his fellow human beings.
