Long after the end of the world survivors wander the fields and wastelands that once housed the cities of Britain. One such survivor, the Man, isolates himself from human contact, until he meets a young woman and the pair begin an adventure that will teach them both what it is to be human.

Texan Charles Farmer left the Air Force as a young man to save the family ranch when his dad died. Like most American ranchers, he owes his bank. Unlike most, he's an astrophysicist with a rocket in his barn - one he's built and wants to take into space. It's his dream. Vic and Blood eke out a meager existence, foraging for food and fighting gangs of cutthroats.

When he finally manages to dig himself out, he realizes that all of mankind seems to have been destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. He travels to New York City only to find it deserted. Making a life for himself there, he is flabbergasted to eventually find Sarah Crandall, who also managed to survive. Together, they form a close friendship until the arrival of Benson Thacker who has managed to pilot his small boat into the city's harbor. At this point, tensions rise between the three, particularly between Thacker, who is white, and Burton, who is black.
