VERDUN The frontline

Documentary using animated maps, recreations and period footage, on conflicts around a French stronghold which the Germans briefly captured during the battle of Verdun in WWI, between February and October of 1916.

1916. René Carpentier is a young French farmer who must leave his home behind in order to fight the Germans and serve his country. On the other side of the great ocean, Canadian Nick Irving leaves behind the woman he loves to photograph the horrors of the War in Europe and to become a hero. Both characters will embark on a journey to the mud of the trenches of Verdun to fight the bloody battles of the Great War with a single purpose ... return home.

The wife of a former general in the German army received a letter in witch she was informed that her husband has to enlist in the German army and fight on the frontline. Affected by this news, she opposed the commanders who brought the letter, which shot her on the site. Her husband, in an act of revenge, starts being a hero on the frontline, violating orders and deciding the fate of the battle of Verdun.

The programme conveys the horror of this military inferno, illustrating the similar experiences of the French and German soldiers and their struggle for survival. It also provides the unknown soldier with a face through various letters, diaries and private photographs.

Magdalena, meanwhile, goes underground with the help of a friend and later immigrates to the Soviet Union. Michael, who has joined the Red Army, discovers on the way to Moscow that Magdalena is staying there. But when his plane lands, she is already on her way back to Germany. Michael hopes that one day, he and Magdalena will be reunited.

When the German commander of an international brigade is badly wounded he gives his five comrades a message which he divides up and secretes into in five cartridges. When he leaves their hide-out to drink from a well he is hit by an enemy bullet.
