The Hopperstad stave church is a marvelous, iconic architectural statement from the fjords of Norway. Replicating the "stavkirke's" spiritual power and beauty became a quest for G.D. "Guy" Paulson of Fargo, ND. His Hopperstad Stave Church Replica is a jewel for the city of Moorhead, MN. Paulson's dream captured the imaginations of the experts, craftsmen, artists, and volunteers who helped him. It is a tribute to those who have gone before and an inspiration to those yet to come.

The sea is rumbling. My body was weakened by the south wind. Sea water seeped into the shivering veins. A king rises with new strength. The labuhan ritual was born as a form of gratitude. The fishermen continue this ritual. Offering after offering dissolves in the swish of the waves. Until one day a young man stood proudly. Human apathy towards nature ignites the anger of the sea. The waves crashed, the body moved uncontrollably. Dragged into the vortex of nature's punishment, his body twisted to the rhythm of the tide before finally being swallowed by the water.

For over two centuries, archaeologists have hailed Pompeii as a sophisticated city at the heart of an advanced ancient civilization. But a series of new excavations is painting a much more complex picture of the city tragically buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. New archaeological finds (including 2,000-year-old lines of graffiti, human remains, and artifacts from ancient homes and businesses) are revealing a city of both staggering wealth and extreme poverty, dependent on slavery, and riven by political conflicts, violence, and riots.

In 1899, a photographer at American Mutoscope & Biograph mounted his camera on the front of a trolley traveling over the Brooklyn Bridge. The three 90-foot rolls he created were edited together to complete the journey from Manhattan to Brooklyn, entitled Across the Brooklyn Bridge. As a commission by the Museum of Modern Art for the re-opening of their facility, American avant-garde filmmaker Bill Morrison took this remarkable footage and recombined it with itself to form a new split-screen extrapolation.

In the chaotic, highly emotional period after the First World War in 1918, the foreign ministers Gustav Stresemann (1878-1929) and Aristide Briand (1862-1932) put all their energies into trying to lead their countries, Germany and France, which were at enmity with each other, into a peaceful future and a united Europe. After their deaths, Europe has to go through a second hell before the plan of these two visionaries succeeds. The cinematic mix of archive footage and re-enactments shows two statesmen, full of facts and emotion, who give each other nothing in difficult negotiations, but at the same time hold on to their shared vision. Even if these two human lives were not enough to reap the fruits of their labor, they sowed the seeds for the next generation. In 1926, Aristide Briand and Gustav Stresemann were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It is a sign that the peoples of the world believe in a Europe at peace.

Memoriae Vitae Oppidi

The massacre occurred 500 years ago. In 1525, the Spanish Royal Council ordered the execution of five members of a cult recently discovered in the Pyrenees. This event marked the beginning of a relentless, century-long prosecution against Basque witchcraft, which exhibited all the hallmarks of the great European witch hunts, including an unstable border between powerful nations, revolts against the lords, raging misogyny, confessions obtained under torture, and mass accusations. These past five centuries, only one account has been heard: that of the inquisitors and jurists, the same ones who invented the myth of flying witches who met with the devil at sabbats to plot their crimes.

This short film from 1946 presents an outline of the fur trade's history and the commercial use of fur in Canada. A thirst for fur by the kings and courts of the Old World positioned the fur trade as part of the country's industrial economy. Fur farming and conservation became increasingly important, although the lonely life of the trapper remained the same. This film offers a view of both.
