Seven Candles For Kwanzaa

Ella returns to her hometown to mend fences with her fractured family. With the help of Griffin, her ex-boyfriend, she encourages her family to celebrate Christmas and Kwanzaa and to heal their past wounds before it’s too late.

The origins of Kwanzaa and the seven principles upon which the pan-African holiday derives its meaning are explored in this fascinating documentary. Narrated by Maya Angelou.

Working since before WW2, UEDA Shoji pierced through amateurism, Then, in his picture world he takes, cuts and rearranges photos through his own sensibility, which takes him to the new media that is Ga-nime, encouraged by his friend the actor SANO Shiro, born in the same prefecture. The pictures used for this exhibition are not only from his most famous “Dune Mode” series, but also of many pre/post-war pictures of his birthplace, streetcars running in Tokyo, and traditional scene of Japan, through which a whole culture appears.

Cold War-era cartoon aimed at convincing workers that increased productivity brings about greater purchasing power. The second of seven smart-looking animated shorts in the "fun and facts about American business" series. Its subject is "the profit motive," and it stars "Freddie Fudsie," a lazy soap maker who just wants to go fishing. He invents bar soap, makes some money, and is about to retire in peace and quiet when a sexy lady (the Profit Motive) walks by and Freddie -- who suddenly needs more money to win her affection -- never sees a fishing hole again. But that's okay, because "the profit motive has been the driving force behind the growth of American industry" and "will make a better life for the children of tomorrow." Oh, really? Watch for the cameo by "Joe," who later starred in Why Play Leap Frog? and Meet King Joe. The films in this series were made possible by a $597,870 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

In 1909, in an undemocratic Sweden, a bastard child is born and given the name of Hervor. Her mother is unmarried, due to which she is called a "whore' and is driven from her home. Hervor grows up at shelters and orphanages, unwanted, rejected by society. As an adult she spends her life struggling for social justice. In old age she tells us her story. Director Knutte Wester brings his grandmother's memories to life thought hand-painted animated images and has us witness someone being rejected in order to unite others. A story that all too often still repeating itself.

Based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical. The story is based on the "coat of many colors" story of Joseph from the Bible's Book of Genesis.
