This beautiful and tragic story is based on a play written in 1912 by Lesya Ukrainka, a Ukrainian poet, writer and political, civil and female activist, and includes mythological characters taken from Ukrainian folklore.

There was substantial collaboration with the film makers before and during the shooting period. It is one of the most outstanding films to be made during the 1980s. Their search for answers leads them to a classified government lab at the heart of the town’s strange occurrences, where they must confront the truth behind the town’s bizarre infection and Lavinia’s own past.
