The popular Shinkansen bullet train serves as the setting for a series of romantic encounters, from youthful flirtations to mature relationships, office affairs, and simply the love of life itself. A common thread is maintained by the young chief conductor and his crew of well-worn professionals and first-time pursers.

Takamiya Susumu is a salary man. He who works in audit division of an insurance company. His job has him traveling all over the country on one-day business trips via the Shinkansen train. When he visits an area on his business trips, he likes to find delicious food nearby and gets it to go. On his return, via the Shinkansen train, he eats the meals that he bought. The train becomes like an izakaya to him, a place to relax with good food and drinks.

Hayato Hayasugi (his last name is a pun on the words for "too fast") and other children will serve as conductors to pilot the Shinkalion. The Shinkalion robots are various models of real-life Japanese bullet trains (shinkansen) that transform into robots to fight an unknown evil to protect the safety and peace of Japan. The children must work together with the adults of the Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute (SUEI) to defeat a monster that looks like a jet black bullet train.

Driven was a motoring television programme launched by Channel 4 in 1998 as a rival to the successful and long-running BBC series Top Gear. The style was similar to its rival, but with additional features such as the "Driven 100", a road test of three cars in the same class, where each car would be given marks for qualities such as practicality, desirability and cost of ownership. The car with the highest total score would be the winner. The programme launched with the concept that the presenters should interact with each other rather than present items on their own, as was then the case on Top Gear. The first series also featured a "headquarters", a racing team truck, set on a former air force base at which cars were put through their paces. These concepts resurfaced in the reborn Top Gear soon after.
