Spanish photographer Francesc Boix, imprisoned in the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, works in the SS Photographic Service. Between 1943 and 1945, he hides, with the help of other prisoners, thousands of negatives, with the purpose of showing the freed world the atrocities committed by the Nazis, exhaustively documented. He will be a key witness during the Nuremberg Trials.

Alon undergoes innovative psychotherapy in New York. He embarks on a tempestuous, soul-searching journey, seeking out the details of his mother's childhood in Poland. He does this as a way of understanding why she, a survivor of the Auschwitz and Majdanek death camps, abandoned him at the age of 10. This film, chronicling the last days of Czech resistance fighter Maruska Kuderikova (played by Magda Vasaryova), is based on her diaries. Though she was tortured and eventually executed by the Nazis, her diaries indicate that she was optimistic for the humanity of her captors and did not by any means hate them. In the camp, people begin to think that the maquis has been betrayed.
