Following World War II, ex-G.I. Stan Fabian opens a drive-in restaurant, where his girlfriend, Joanie, is a car hop. They want to get married someday, but less-than-stellar business puts a hold on that. One day, Joanie's ne’er-do-well brother Frank blows into town with a money-making scheme. She's against it, but inveterate gambler Stan finds the promise of riches too seductive to resist.

What to do with the ashes in the cocoa can, the remains of someone who has neither an urn nor any living relatives? The mortician, Serge, is a lonely man who leads a monotonous and joyless existence — and the only person attending the funeral happens to be his ex-wife. Serge has also had to look after their daughter, Inès, at short notice. His attempt to give the deceased stranger a dignified funeral creates an opportunity to repair his relationship with Inès.

Lieutenant Udo visits his family in the company of two good friends of his. One of them – Lieutenant Borch – immediately falls in love with Udo’s sister, Ebba, and she with him. While caught up in the rush of new love, he receives a letter from a loan shark to whom he owes money, demanding that he pay the debt immediately. Although his feelings for Ebba are genuine, he is now forced to plan a proposal in order to pledge Ebba’s dowry. When her father, the major, gives his blessing for the marriage but follows this up with the disheartening news that there will be no dowry, Borch finds it hard to hide his desperation.
