Empty Quarter: A Woman in Africa

Akkaldhamayile Pennu is a Malayalam movie directed by Jairam Kailas released on 20 November 2015. The film is based on a story of a woman gravedigger. The film was produced by Kasim Arikkulam and Ashik Doha under the banner of Pearl Media and Movie Productions. Swetha Menon, Malavika Nair, Vineeth, and Sudheer Karamana had the leading roles.

The first film in Vlatko Gilić’s Sisyphean trilogy, Homo sapiens follows a suited man as he takes a trek back and forth across a sandy desert to fill an oversized barrel using a woefully small tub of water. Shot in stark black and white and edited to achieve a dreamlike quality, the man’s devotion to this task is tested and taunted by a young couple that frolics around the barrel.

The theme of death is heavily interwoven in Smolder’s surreal salute to Belgian painter Antoine Wiertz, a Hieronymus Bosch-type artist whose work centered on humans in various stages in torment, as depicted in expansive canvases with gore galore. Smolders has basically taken a standard documentary and chopped it up, using quotes from the long-dead artist, and periodic statements by a historian (Smolders) filling in a few bits of Wiertz’ life.

In the early 1920s, Georges Laffont, traumatized by the horrific trench warfare, decides to leave his life behind and travel to West Africa. In the vast territories of Upper Volta he - with the help of Diofo, artist and also survivor of the Great War - try to recruit the villagers as labor for plantations in Ghana. But his adventure leads him to a dead-end, and he comes back to Paris desperate to find his place in the world.

Some time later, her daughter decides to travel to Ouagadougou, in search of her missing mother. Once they are reconnected, they attempt to escape from their male-dominated society.

Lacking a formal narrative, Warhol's mammoth film follows various residents of the Chelsea Hotel in 1966 New York City. The film was intended to be screened via dual projector set-up.
