Deep in the forest a group of five friends wander around like a lion herd. Lost in their word games, they play and seduce each other while going back and forth into adulthood territory, in a desperate search to avoid their already written story.

The ramshackle Smoky River Ranch is all that stands in the way of a developer and a big real-estate deal, but the old man who owns the ranch won't sell it, because he has to take care of some down-and-out theater people to honor his dead son's memory. Frustrated, the developer sends in a pretty young girl to try to trick the old man into selling the ranch.

In this animated reverie, ambient sound and poetic narration evoke the experiences of a young boy in the forest at twilight. Accompanied by a friend, the boy walks past vigilant rocks and a sentinel tree, hears the grasses' silent plea ("don't tread on us, leave us be"), espies a spider in his web and two worms snug in their leafy bed. In the darkening sky, they watch clouds billow by tickling the snoring moon. Arriving home, the boy wonders where the path of the nearby river flows.
