Sponsored by Unilever's blue detergent, Surf, the program began as a one hour comedy-drama on June 17, 1950, and ran in prime time on the NBC network until October 12, 1950. On April 2, 1951, the series was moved to a fifteen-minute daytime slot, where it was retitled Hawkins Falls: A Television Novel, and developed into a soap opera format. Hawkins Falls ran until July 1, 1955, making it NBC's longest running soap opera until The Doctors exceeded it in 1967. The town of Hawkins Falls was patterned after the real-life town of Woodstock, Illinois.

Starting Out is an Australian television soap opera made for the Nine Network by the Reg Grundy Organisation in 1983. The series was the network's replacement for The Young Doctors, set at a medical college with an emphasis on young people getting their first experience of living away from home and leading independent lives. The youthful cast included Gary Sweet, David Clencie, Nikki Coghill, Tottie Goldsmith and Peter O'Brien, whilst more experienced cast members complementing the young leads included Maurie Fields, Gerard Maguire, Jill Forster and Anne Phelan. The series failed to gain sufficient ratings and was quickly cancelled and removed from the schedules after five episodes. The remaining eighty episodes were screened out-of-ratings in late 1983.
General Hospital is a British daytime soap produced by ATV, which ran on ITV from 1972 to 1979. It was modelled after the American drama of the same name. In 1975, after 270 twice-weekly episodes, General Hospital was given a primetime slot on Friday evening. The move saw the episodes double from 30 to 60 minutes, with each being more self-contained, while on-screen medical procedures, including detailed scenes of surgery, became more prominent. In a fictional Midlands town, the series follows the romantic and professional lives of its doctors and nurses. While the location and the characters names had been changed, in most other respects, General Hospital was almost identical to its predecessor, Emergency - Ward 10, a deliberate attempt to recreate its success.
