Science Please! : Sound Is Vibration

Abstract Day is a semi-abstract animation film by Oerd van Cuijlenborg based on a story which is told in sound. We witness a day in the life of a couple, who fight, make love and escape the hot and crowded city. It is a simple story in which the visuals and sound are produced together to merge into a unique world.

Nearly thirty years after making his surrealist La Formula Secreta, director Rubén Gámez returned to filmmaking with this impressionistic portrait of modern-day Mexico. Reminiscent in some ways of Godfrey Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi, Tequila appears to be a cinematic extension of Mexico’s muralist tradition, a contemporary equivalent of Diego Rivera or David Alfaro Siqueiros with vignettes, quick ideas, visual puns, cartoons, and political statements.

Treating a trumpet as if it was a portion of fish and chips is not basic culinary research but an audio-activistic intervention that lends a voice to British fishermen’s opinion towards Brexit. And the title ‘audio activist’ is very fitting for the British composer Matthew Herbert. ‘A Symphony of Noise’ provides an insight into Herbert’s thoughts about how we should hear the world and presents amplified sounds of teeth being pulled out, a pig being born, and a swimmer crossing the English Channel. The controversial and political samples become a part of a live performance at the Berlin night club Berghain, which makes the listeners both grate their teeth and dance along. Matthew Herbert wants us to listen to the world afresh, and it is a pretty fantastic experience.

A cloudy sky hides the reality from us.

A residential tower block in East London. The clicks and growls that are constantly being created by the building’s inner workings. Its vibrations, electric wiring, heathers, exhaust pipes, plumbing, etc, create a variety of sounds which permeate our living habitats.

Three mystical characters gather in misty mountain cabin, where they start to tell stories to each other. Folktales takes viewers to Finnish landscapes where mysterious and strange incidents have occurred over time. After three stories the mist has passed and three characters leave the cabin.

Yennenga was a legendary princess and a famous warrior, considered to be the mother of the Mossi people of Burkina Faso who lived between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries. The cut-out paper animation is an adaptation of a tale by Bila Kaboré.

Tells about a little violinist who played so wonderfully that his violin was considered magical.

A flying hippo on a quest to find the nearest pond. A fish behind the wheel, fleeing from a shark. A little koala who wants to hop like the kangaroos, and a raucous mob of elephants throwing a party – which drives the monkeys up the wall. There's never a dull moment in these four colourfully animated episodes from the animal kingdom, enlivened by the groovy jazz sounds of award-winning Swedish quintet Oddjob.

Various members of the insect world join forces to harass a man who unknowingly makes their lives miserable.

Scrappy runs a theater where he acts as the ticket collecter, the usher, the snack vendor, and the performer. He later has some probelms with another child in the audience.
