Naomi Campbell and two other supermodel mentors will choose four hopeful models to mentor and guide as members of their exclusive team. Over eight weeks the three teams will have to compete in a series of real life fashion industry challenges. In the end only one supermodel mentor will triumph and see one of their handpicked girls become The Face.

Normally, one poor-performing contestant is eliminated each week until the last contestant remaining is declared "The Next Top Model" and receives a modeling contract along with other associated prizes.

In April 2012 it was announced that the series would take a break for 2012 due to the fact that producers of the show were having trouble finding a replacement for Sarah Murdoch. It was announced on 19 November 2012 that beauty queen, model, and television personality Jennifer Hawkins was chosen as the new host for the ongoing eighth cycle.

The show featured a search for a new model with the winner securing a year's contract with a top model agency. The programme was produced by Princess Productions and was similar in format to ITV's Popstars in that it followed the fortunes of several individuals as they lived together and competed for the top prize. The first series followed five women who had been picked from thousands of applicants. The second series followed both male and female potential models. The 2001 series was won by Jenny Richards, a young mother from south Wales who won a year's contract with the Premier agency. and went on to have a successful career as a catwalk model. The 2002 winners were South African Nathan Roberts, and Camilla Priest from Sunderland, who both won a year's contract with Select.

Germany's Next Topmodel is a German reality television show, based on a concept that was introduced by Tyra Banks with America's Next Top Model. The competition is hosted by Heidi Klum. She also serves as the lead judge and executive producer of the show.

New Zealand's Next Top Model is a New Zealand reality television series in which a number of young women compete for the title of New Zealand's Next Top Model and the chance to start their career in the modeling industry. The show's format was originally created by American talk-show host and model Tyra Banks. The New Zealand series is hosted by former model and 62 Models Management founder Sara Tetro, and airs on TV3 NZ. The winner of NZNTM wins a modelling contract with Sara's agency. Like its American counterpart, NZNTM features a photographer and international model on its judging panel, Chris Sisarich and Colin Mathura-Jeffree, respectively. Mathura-Jeffree also acts as runway coach to the girls, much like Miss Jay on America's Next Top Model.
