With a sprinkling of light-hearted competition, the series will see five new couples head out to a different European campsite each week, with the aim of winning a £1000 prize. Each afternoon sees each camp couple able to win points during allocated activities, with the losing couple having to clean camp that night. There will be nominated cooks and another couple will be in charge of organising the camp entertainment, which will be judged and scored by their fellow campers. The remaining couples will take part in traditional, cultural activities, which will be judged by local experts. At the end of the week, the couple with the most points wins the cash prize.

Rob Brydon is the games master who takes 13 carefully selected players on board the X-bus and asks them one simple question - where the X are they? With blacked-out windows, all they have to do is try to deduce where in the world they are, because at the end of every episode, they must place an X on a map. The closest stay on the bus - the furthest away is eliminated from the competition. In the end, one walks away with a cash prize of £100,000. However, Norway holds the record for the number of entries who have come last since entering Eurovision; 11 in all. Despite this, the competition still makes considerable impact on music charts in Norway, and in other Nordic countries, with the 2008 winner topping the Norwegian charts.

The show's format consists of four to seven teams of two undertaking a coach tour principally of continental Europe. The tours have usually lasted 30 or 50 days, with passengers remaining on the tour only until they are ejected by their companions on one day, to be replaced by a new couple the following day. The travellers are accompanied by tour guide Brendan Sheerin, who appears in every episode.

Love Generation revolves around the relationship of the two leading protagonists, Katagiri Teppei and Uesugi Riko, who begin their relationship as squabbling colleagues before falling in love.
