Quirky and rebellious April Burns lives with her boyfriend in a low-rent New York City apartment miles away from her emotionally distant family. But when she discovers that her mother has a fatal form of breast cancer, she invites the clan to her place for Thanksgiving. While her father struggles to drive her family into the city, April -- an inexperienced cook -- runs into kitchen trouble and must ask a neighbor for help.

The film accompanies Jenny Gröllmann, a German actress, during the last two years of her life.

After finding a lump in one of her breasts, Magda goes to visit her doctor who gives her bad news: she needs a mastectomy, preceded by severe chemo treatments. Shortly after its release, the book was optioned by Working Title Films in conjunction with Cate Blanchett. In March 2013, it was announced that HBO Films is set to produce a film adaptation of the book starring Blanchett. HBO Films is closing a deal with Julie Delpy to adapt the Marisa Acocella Marchetto memoir Cancer Vixen: A True Story as a star vehicle for Cate Blanchett.
