Philip Roth’s “The Humbling” is adapted into a literate if uneven showcase for Pacino as an actor who doubts his purpose. While resting up in the country, he meets and starts an unexpected affair with daffy Gerwig, daughter of a former girlfriend and is harassed by unbalanced Ananda who wants him to kill her husband. The leads keep this afloat even when the plotting is awry.
