Summer 1978. High schooler Kurita is inspired by Star Wars, and films a spaceship scene on a 8mm camera together with his friend Ozawa. When the class is discussing a project for their school festival, Kurita's suggestion to make an SF movie ends up winning. Together with their movie fan classmate Sasaki, the boys start to plan a movie and manage to convince Yamashita, the prettiest girl in class, to star as the heroine. Over the summer vacation, the four shoot their movie, "Time Reverse", where an alien spaceship arrives on Earth to turn back time in order to save mankind from itself.

Kaveh is an LGBT sculptor. He lives in Iran and lives in isolation because of his sexual orientation. He has a lover named Farhad. Their relationship is not very good. It is Kaveh who is not happy with this relationship, he lives in his workshop because of the repression of LGBTs in Iran. He is making a statue when he suddenly realizes that this statue is talking to him. The words of the statue are not clear and are more like chatter. He breaks up his relationship with Farhad like his previous relationships, because something more than sex requires a relationship. He enjoys being alone more, but now he realizes that Farhad has destroyed the only statue they made together. The whispering sound of the statue increases and every moment Kaveh's mental state is more disturbed, to the point that he works day and night to build that statue. The statue is completed as if the statue is the lost lover of Kaveh. By completing the statue of Kaveh, he becomes a statue.

In his final year, he discovers a golden opportunity: a national short film competition. In the seacoast town of Boulogne, antique furniture saleswoman Hélène lives with her stepson, Bernard, who's back from military duty in Algiers. An old lover of Hélène's comes to visit, Alphonse, with his niece Françoise; he too is back from Algiers, where he ran a café. Bernard speaks of his fiancée, Muriel, whom Hélène has not met. The past is obscured by guilt, misperceptions, and missed possibilities. Appearances deceive, things change. As Hélène and Alphonse try to sort out a renewal, everyone seems off-kilter just enough to hint that all cannot end well.
