Luis el Roto is a laborer who, due to a lack of money, cannot marry his girlfriend Rosa; they live in a poor alleyway with their respective mothers. Luis is loved by the prostitute Carlota, and for this reason he despises the pimp Rodolfo, who beats Luis in the public restrooms. Tragedy looms over Luis.

Pretty young Nell Bradley is the daughter of a saloonkeeper in a "dry" town, and is looked down upon by townspeople, but Rev. Charles Alden, the town minister, finds himself attracted to her. One day at Nell's father's bar, a traveling salesman gets a young woman intoxicated, intending to "have his way" with her. Nell sees this and gets the bartender to save the young woman's virtue, but just at that moment Rev. Alden walks in and mistakenly believes that Nell has gotten the girl drunk. Complications ensue.

Mid 20th century. Industry is developing rapidly and the need for workers in factories is growing. After graduating from the tenth year, Viktor Chernyshyov, now a city dweller, did not bother to continue his education and went to the plant as a turner. He considered it quite normal that the guys enthusiastically listened to the stories of his peer Kolya, a lounger who boasted of victories over women, and participated in his dubious amusements. Only one of them, Pyotr — a real worker, a doctor, tried to reason with Kolya and the others.

Robert Moore is the general manager of the firm run by John Gibson. After Gibson makes several visits to Moore's home, unfounded rumors begin of a relationship between Gibson and Moore's wife, Martha. Moore is discovered with a revolver in his hand, standing over Gibson's dead body. In fact, Moore’s best friend committed the murder, but Moore is convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Impulsively Martha remarries to a man who proves to be a brute. When Moore is set free after the real murderer confesses, he visits his former wife just as her husband attacks her. In a struggle, Moore shoots him in self-defense and is then reunited with his family.

What once appeared right starts to feel incomplete, and what seemed wrong reveals hidden truths. Time slowly exposes the gaps between appearance and reality. Kaalam reflects on how easily humans judge one another, and how time alone has the power to correct those judgments. It ultimately observes how time alters judgment and changes the way people see one another.

Omer and Carine move restlessly from place to place and keep their heads above water with tournaments at the pool table. Both are on the run from their past: Omer as an African refugee, Frenchwoman Carine as an ex-junkie who was in danger of sinking into the drug scene.
