A society without money or competition: AfrikaBurn, the largest regional event inspired by the world-famous Burning Man, becomes the setting for a unique experiment. In the middle of the South African desert, an eclectic group of friends sets up their LOVEBOX spaceship, inviting visitors on a journey to the stars — and into themselves. Inside the LOVEBOX, two strangers meet for a few minutes and explore a question about love. Their encounters give rise to unexpected moments of connection and self-discovery. When the dust of the festival settles, the friends set out to bring the magic of the LOVEBOX into everyday life. But can the openness and sense of connection they experienced at AfrikaBurn survive beyond its temporary utopia?

A group of people from different countries decide to leave our everyday world behind for a few days and immerse themselves in a magical happening: the Burning in South Africa. There, they bring a carefully planned experiment to life with the Lovebox. Anyone who enters it embarks on a short, imaginary journey into space, where they encounter a stranger simply by looking into each other’s eyes. What happens between these two space travellers can be incredibly emotional. There is a closeness between two complete strangers, a moment of openness, almost like looking into another person’s soul without a visor. The film lets us witness these very personal and touching encounters, and I found some of these moments incredibly moving. But the film is not only about the Lovebox. It also shows, sometimes with a lot of humour, all the work that goes into the project, the dynamics within the group and life at the Burning itself. Eric from Ireland is the main protagonist and also the film’s off-screen narrator. He talks about his own experiences of the event and this colourful group of idealists and free spirits, but also about his life before and after.
I found the film beautiful, thought-provoking and inspiring. It takes you into an almost surreal world and into the breathtaking landscape of the South African desert. For me, it is also a film that gives hope because, in a time marked by so much conflict and division, it reminds us of what connects us as human beings. A masterpiece. I absolutely loved it!

All in all, a thoughtful, moving, and entertaining documentary that leaves you wanting to keep talking long after the credits have rolled. A clear recommendation for an enjoyable and, in the best sense of the word, enlightening evening at the cinema.
