小泉今日子４０周年スペシャル

This is the first part of an omnibus TV drama special production starring three popular idols at that time, namely Nakayama Miho, Oginome Yoko, and Koizumi Kyoko. The stories, or mysterious events, all started with the revelation of the anomaly phenomenon by Horaguchi-sensei, the trio's physics teacher. The anomaly is due to the concurrent event of Hinamatsuri and the visit of Halley's comet to the inner solar system on March 3rd. Horaguchi-sensei teaches the class how to make use of the anomaly to unlock a mysterious event. This can be done by using any camera while chanting the specific keywords when pressing the camera shutter. From there, three separately mysterious events involving the three heroines began.

A person in charge of “Belonging” appears before people whose lives have ended and tells them, “Do you have any regrets in this world? If you have, you can become an object and return there.” A wife decides to become her husband’s favorite mug, a boy becomes his favorite blue jungle gym, a grandmother becomes the camera that she gave to her grandson, and a mother becomes rosin that is used in a baseball game so that she can watch her son pitch in the game. The death of their former kumicho (Boss) puts Medaka Gumi on the verge of a breakup. Therefore, Sakuma begs Izumi, the former boss's only distant relative left, to succeed to the kumicho position. Izumi is taken by surprise and keeps refusing at first. However, she ends up becoming the 8th kumicho of the Medaka Gumi! The police tell her that her father's death may possibly be a homicide case. There's also Mayumi, a mysterious woman staring closely at Izumi's father's photograph at his funeral. The situation becomes complicated when the drug-dealing vicious yakuza, Hamaguchi Gumi, comes into the picture as well as Sandaiji Hajime, a politician whose public stance is to eliminate drugs.

SMAP×SMAP was an ongoing weekly Japanese variety show on Kansai TV and Fuji TV starring the members of SMAP. The show began on April 15, 1996 and it aired from 22:00 to 22:54 every Monday. The show's usual ratings were higher than 20%, which is considered high since most variety shows range from 10-20%.
