The film explores a new vision of cultural identity, defying the notion of a so-called 'clash of cultures' and challenging barriers to understanding between different communities. Although focusing on the lives of British men and women, the film will strike a chord with any and all of those around the world living in a tight-knit community, under pressure to maintain their identity.

In South Africa’s abandoned mines, men scrabble for gold, using hand hammers and bicycle head-lamps, often remaining underground for days, often without food. Their survival is dependent on their hands – and luck. They are gamblers, or Zama Zama, who hope to scrounge a living from exhausted veins despite crumbling mineshafts and criminal overlords because at home in Zimbabwe they have nothing, there is nothing. The video footage is shot by miners with GoPros and in spite of harrowing conditions, we see uplifting camaraderie, caring collaboration and inspiring good cheer, as we are taken into their subterranean lives, guided by director-producer-anthropologist Rosalind Morris. Above ground, they smile. Gangsters prey on them, and the women cough from the glass-like dust of the rocks they crush by hand. But still they smile. An extraordinary story of human endurance, not to be missed.

Among the ”Red Guards“ of China’s Cultural Revolution were foreign children, the sons and daughters of both European and American ex-pats who left their home countries to help build Mao’s China. Eventually, Chinese society turned against them and they were persecuted as foreign spies. Some served time in prison, others were sent to labor camps.

Young journalist Stanislav Aseyev reports for several Ukrainian media outlets from Donetsk, his hometown. In May 2017, he is kidnapped and spends 962 days in detention, mainly in a former cultural center, converted into a prison, called Izolyatsia —or Isolation.

The film captures the struggles of Sudanese revolutionaries after the October 2021 coup – a turning point that halted the revolution's progress and led to the current devastating war. Filmed over three years (2021-2023), including just weeks before the war began, it portrays life in Sudan during that turbulent time, blending scenes of peaceful daily life, protests, and resistance, especially during Ramadan and Bayram. Created by Sudanese activists and artists, the film sheds light on the overlooked causes of the war, challenging the narrative of a »civil war« and exposing deeper capitalist and colonial forces.

On the occasion of the »Construction Days« in the autumn of 1969, the Hamburg Building Authority commissioned five HFBK film students to film one Hamburg commercial each. Christian Bau opted for a critical portrait of Osdorfer Born, Hamburg's first large-scale, prefabricated housing estate, which had been built from 1967 by Neue Heimat, SAGA and other housing companies on the western edge of the city. The images, shot on 16mm, were accompanied by interview passages and a text taken from SAGA's housing construction program. The client was less than enthusiastic, the film disappeared into a closet for decades and can now be shown for the first time in the cinema.

The former DFFB student and filmmaker Max D. Willutzki moved to the Märkisches Viertel (MV) in 1969, a large housing estate built between 1963 and 1974 for 60,000 residents on the outskirts of West Berlin. Together with Christian Ziewer and others, he documented the political neighbourhood work on the estate. The resulting »Basis-Filme« formed the starting point for the later Basis-Film distribution company. This film shows how the Arbeitskreis Mieten und Wohnen (workgroup rents and housing) succeeds in preventing the forced eviction of the working-class Puhle family, who can no longer pay their rent.

In 1995, Jerry Brown, 18, was sentenced to life without parole for murder at Angola (Louisiana), America's most infamous maximum-security prison. He is now the star of the Angola Prison Rodeo. Each Sunday in October, inmates battle bulls without training for a few seconds of fame and some money. For Angola's warden, the proceeds of the rodeo fund the religious education of his inmates. "Razor Wire Rodeo" tells the unflinching story of lives defined by violence and crushed by the pitiless corrections practices in Louisiana. Jerry Brown believes his fame will help him to get out of Angola. But in a state, that hardly ever grants clemencies, his battle against the bull is symbolic of a fight for freedom lost a long time ago.
