When Night Falls

The C-list TV actor Jonnie Zhang decides to change career as an estate agent. While preparing for the interview, he hires a cleaner to tidy up his long non-visited mansion. A cleaner receives a task to a vacant house, and she decides to stay over night realizing that the bus service has been suspended. Out of every clue hidden in the house, she fantasizes its whole family and secrets, along with her own previous life she comes across.

Four college students from Shandong University of Technology planned to make a documentary about the folk culture of ghosts and spirits. They went to a village in Heze City, Shandong Province, and made some interviews with local villagers. During the interviews, they heard a lot of local weird tales. The shooting of the documentary went smoothly, and that night, they chose to stay in the village. At this point, strange things, however, began to happen...

“On my planet” is a short love story. The concept is that everyone owns a little planet. The main character of my story is little boy called blue who owns a big blue planet but lives a very lonely and boring life. Until one day he found out an orange planet where a little girl lives on it , however it would only come every 72 years. This is the story about how he use every methods to attracts the girl’s attention and how he mange to pursuit his love.

A day of Xiaoyang, the curator of a village church. Xiaoyang and her husband have just registered their marriage, but they cannot hold a wedding in the church for her husband is not a Christian. Before the wedding, she is waiting for her husband’s baptism.

A boy with horns gathers a group of Cosers, each armed with the same traditional woodworking tools, from the grocery store, the old cathedral, the gatehouse, the forest, the farmyard, the electric mahjong parlour, the old castle and so on. At midnight, with clumsy labor, they made a huge cross.

In the summer of 2007, Gan Xiaoer led an independent film projection team, using projectors and self-made screens, to tour villages in Henan province to show his feature film "Raised from dust" for 8 times, and recorded the process. The 81-minute version of Church Cinema records only one stop, the Qiliying Church, where "Raised from dust" was shot.

One boy, one girl. One close space, one silent night. What is the relation between them? The great works in art history structure, influence their relations, and show us something. At the same time, the boy and the girl convey their experience and taste on these works. Usually, a boy and a girl will make love to end a scene or a film, but it didn’t happen. It seems that they spend the night clearly, but the tomorrow is still unknown.

The Shoe Shiner's Journey

An old Beijing Opera performer who moves to the U.S. forgets his lines on the stage which causes him considerable distress. A female protege of his takes him for a walk on the beach along with her dog and her half-Chinese son. A string of dream-like memories of his old days are triggered by this walk, and he is gripped by a wave of nostalgia as the singing of Beijing Opera comes on in the background, making the boundary between reality and fantasy all the more blurry. The sea glitters in the setting sun and seabirds sing above the sea, the beautiful scene which awakes him from his trance...

The relationship between two young men in Beijing becomes strained after one of them develops an unusual fetish.

This is my second documentary film, and it is fully composed of old people. One woman, nearing 80, is living out the last two years of her life. From when she is still using a cane to walk, to when she becomes paralyzed. This is my grandmother. We also see other elderly people from the village, their daily activities, the tales of their starvation from 50 years ago.

It is the director's second documentary of "my village" series since she got involved with the "Folk Memory Project". She returned to her hometown to shoot footage, recording the realities she encountered in her search for memories. Her biggest question is: after experiencing the disaster of the tragic famine fifty years ago, the villagers now are not short of food, and are living a better life than before, but is the spirit of this village still starving?
