Jim Newton and his adopted son Joey navigate life on the Broken Wheel Ranch, with their close bond to the wild black stallion Fury.

12-year-old Ragnhild hears a legend about a mad horse that long, long ago ran away from its owners and fled to the mountains. Since then, no one has seen the wild animal. Until now. Ragnhild hears noises in the night and catches a glimpse of a large, black figure trampling in the yard. Shortly afterwards, the animal is gone. She tells others about her experiences, but no one believes her. She therefore decides to travel up to the mountain farm and stay in her family's old cabin. Perhaps she will see the black horse again there. She takes her best friend with her to the mountains in search of the so-called "Wild Horse." However, the wild animal is not the only danger posed by the mighty Sunnmøre Alps. Dangers lurk everywhere in the wild landscape, and hunters are also hunting in the same area. They shoot almost anything they come across.

Steve Kinney and his henchman, Mort, are trying to stir up trouble between the local ranchers and farmers, behind a wave of rustling and lawlessness. Mort kills Vic, a Kirby cowhand, and lays the blame on Dan Harper, the leader of the farmers faction. Storekeeper Fuzzy Q. Jones, fearful of losing the outstanding charge-accounts he has on his books, drags his reluctant pal, Billy Carson, into the fray, and the two soon prove Kinney and his henchmen to be behind the valley's troubles.

Torrent stops wild horse stampede. Starks spills beans on Engle. Torrent kills Engle and wins Patsy Olcott.

Baker, the ranch's crooked foreman, is utilizing the stallion as a decoy and, with his henchmen, Raymer and Winton, corrals the mares that follow the stallion in a hidden corral, intending to sell them across the state line.

The fourth of six films McDowall coproduced and starred in for Monogram Pictures, Black Midnight was directed by Oscar “Budd” Boetticher, whose seven Westerns with Randolph Scott are considered classics of the genre.
