In 1993, amid financial turmoil and the looming threat of extinction, Botafogo, one of Brazil's most historic football clubs, was going through one of the darkest chapters in its history. Deprived of financial resources and with a dismantled roster, the club had no choice but to field inexperienced young players from its youth ranks, many of whom had barely played for the professional team. Leading this discredited team was a prominent figure in Brazilian football: Carlos Alberto Torres, the legendary captain of the 1970 World Cup-winning Brazilian national team. More than just a coach, Torres took on the mission of restoring dignity and fighting spirit to a club on the brink of collapse. His presence became a symbol of leadership, resilience, and confidence in the face of overwhelming uncertainty.

More than 15 years after leaving the country, Eugène Murangwa, the former goalkeeper of the most popular club in Rwanda and national team, returns to his native land to pass on the values of a sport which saved him in 1994 to the young people of an association that he created with former football players. Illustrated with previously unseen archives, the film throws a new light on the history of Rwanda through football, a sport which served the “civilizing” mission of the colonizer, allowed the Hutu Power to mobilize the youth and helped the reconstruction of the country after the genocide.

At a special ceremony during the opening of the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, seven Indigenous men in their fifties entered the stadium in war canoes. One of them held the Games torch. In 1967 when Winnipeg first hosted the Pan American Games, ten outstanding athletic teenage boys were chosen to run 800 kilometers over an ancient message route with the Games torch. When the runners arrived at the stadium, they were not allowed to enter with the torch. Instead, a non-Indigenous runner was given the honour. Thirty-two-years later, the province of Manitoba issued an official apology. Nine of the ten young men chosen for the 1967 Pan Am Games torch run were from residential schools. Niigaanibatowaad is about the segregation of the Indigenous athletes and the despair and abuse suffered in the school system. Niigaanibatowaad: FrontRunners is a story of survival, hope, reconciliation and a dream for a new beginning that transcends hatred and racism.

The documentary primarily focuses on two ex-players: Jim Otto and Roger Stillwell. Otto was a star center for the Oakland Raiders during the 1960s and 1970s. On the surface, his story seems to represent all that is right about pro football; after a long career he was elected to the NFL’s Hall of Fame and then enjoyed great business success as a restaurant franchise owner. Viewers learn, however, that Otto’s health is terrible, though was just 46 at the time of filming. The most-moving story in Disposable Heroes belongs to Roger Stillwell, a 6-foot-6 defensive lineman from Stanford University, who achieved a brief moment in the sun with the Chicago Bears. Stillwell’s career ended in an instant during a 1977 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
