Watching High Rollers – The Golden Age of Arizona Skateboarding is like finding a lost artifact that helps complete a larger mystery from the past. In this case High Rollers adds a much needed layer of knowledge to the origins of radical vertical, and over-vertical, skateboarding. The skateboard boom of the 1970’s went from “sidewalk surfing” and driveway antics to aerials out of backyard swimming pools in an astonishingly short span of time. This evolutionary leap was for the most part well documented in the pages of Skateboarder Magazine and the 2001 documentary Dogtown and Z-Boyz. However, the field of vision both of these forms of media is narrow (although both are excellent), they both deal almost exclusively with what was happening in California (with occasional nods to Florida). It is understandable as skateboarding was born and given life in California, but what happened next? What was going on elsewhere?

Four teams, each with five hand-picked skateboarders, one photographer, one filmer, & one team manager, with two weeks to make their way across America skating, filming, competing and earning points by: • Performing tricks in "the book" • Completing challenges in certain cities • Doing other wacky challenges (like skating naked) • Picking up their "Mystery Guest" • Battling it out with their film and video footage to do the highest, longest , and gnarliest trick!

During the filming process, a lot has changed in the world we used to know. With no idea of when borders will open up or where skateboarding was headed, I spent the last four years traveling and filming the people around me, digging deeper and deeper into the Japanese skate scene. Making Noise chronicles the long struggle of the skateboarders of Northfield, Minnesota, to secure a permanent place for their sport. Shot in close collaboration with the latest generation of skateboarders, the film follows their efforts as they meet with city officials to fundraise, envision, and design a skatepark that seems to fit nowhere. A voiceover narration recorded by the skaters and based on city records, reveals the inefficiency of a process slowed down by outdated stereotypes about skateboarding and a thinly veiled resistance to the skateboarders. The film calls into question Northfield’s open-minded and friendly reputation in light of the community’s delay to find a place for its own youths. Making Noise bears witness to young people’s resilience and perseverance as it exposes the victories and failures of the civic process in small town America.

Skaters and BMX riders show off some freestyle tricks. These freestylers demonstrate why the fad turned into a lifestyle choice for many riders and skaters.
