On January 8, 2020, Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 went down as it was leaving Iranian air space. All 176 people on board were killed, many of them Iranian Canadians. There were no answers as to why the plane was fired on or even why it was allowed to take off, since hostilities had broken out in the region in preceding days.

INVASION is a documentary about the collective memory of a country. The invasion of Panama by the U.S in 1989 serves as an excuse to explore how a people remember, transform, and often forget their past in order to re-define their identity and become who they are today.

The second part of the series Cypriot Collage Stories sketches out the history of this Mediterranean island as a conflict of its two mothers – Aphrodite and Virgin Mary. Animations and collages are intertwined with found footage of the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island, revealing the obvious fact that modern conflicts are rooted in history.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is drawn at the border towns of Sderot and Gaza, neighboring towns separated by a wall and a few hundred yards. People on both sides hate each other; their governments interact only through bombs and wars.

Tatiana is forty-two years old and she is a stylist for one of Kyiv’s women’s magazines. She is ironic, self-confident, Tatiana lives in a large house on the suburbs of the Ukrainian capital and she enjoys the freedom that her recent divorce gave her. Her quite successful life is interrupted by the outbreak of the war. Friends and acquaintances come to her house, including her ex-husband and colleague who has a crush on her. Together, they watch how Russia destroys their city. After a few days, almost everyone tries to get out of Kyiv and persuades Tatiana to follow. But she can’t make up her mind.

“There was excitement in the air,” says Donga, now in his late twenties, describing his feelings when the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi’s rule broke out in 2011. He was 19, living in Misrata, and boldly went to film the fighting with a friend. A decade later, in a hotel in Istanbul, where he has been living since he was wounded in battle, he looks back on the past ten years through excerpts from his videos. And he reflects on how that period has affected him.

Amid the failing counteroffensive, a journalist follows a Ukrainian platoon on their mission to traverse one mile of heavily fortified forest and liberate a strategic village from Russian occupation. But the farther they advance through their destroyed homeland, the more they realize that this war may never end.
