“2048: Nowhere to Run” takes place one year before the events of Blade Runner 2049. The short film focuses on Sapper, a man who is trying to make it through life day-by-day without turning back to his old ways. We’re introduced to both the gentle nature of Sapper and the violence he’s capable of when set off.

This animated short revolves around the events causing an electrical systems failure on the west coast of the US. According to Blade Runner 2049’s official timeline, this failure leads to cities shutting down, financial and trade markets being thrown into chaos, and food supplies dwindling. There’s no proof as to what caused the blackouts, but Replicants — the bio-engineered robots featured in the original Blade Runner, are blamed.

This in-world short film takes place in the year 2036 and revolves around Jared Leto’s character, Niander Wallace. In this short, Wallace introduces a new line of “perfected” replicants called the Nexus 9, seeking to get the prohibition on replicants repealed. This no doubt has serious ramifications that will be crucial to the plot of Blade Runner 2049.

The film toggles between the year 2024 an 2054 in Cape Town South Africa. We are presented with two old ladies "Liv and Zea" In their younger years, whilst desperate for money to fund shopping sprees and a lifestyle they could not afford, they were recruited by an international spy organization to carry out "hits" on people who were deemed to be undesirable by the agency. These adventures take them to some exotic locations. Liv is a stereotypical dizzy blonde who is always getting herself in to trouble. Zea is a Russian immigrant with an unusual understanding of the English language who fled her native country to escape a war.

A young man named Erik has turned his back on Earth to search for answers in the vastness of space. Far away from any stars and planets, in complete loneliness, a woman suddenly answers the radio. The conversations of the two let Erik gradually doubt his intention and even reality itself.
