Doctor Dolittle and His Animals

The peaceful daily routine of father and son is interrupted by an encounter of an unfamiliar boy, different from them in color. An allegory to the phenomena of racism as an acquired cultural epidemic, the story discusses the question of the personal conscience of each of us, versus the education we receive from our families and environment. Can we really insist on our personal belief system, when what we must believe in, is dictated to us? The film presents how easily we acquire fear and hatred of foreigners, as well as how easily we might become the "strangers" and "others" ourselves.

Beggar boy Krabat is lured to apprentice for an evil, one-eyed sorcerer. With a number of others, he works at the sorcerer's mill while learning black magic. The visual style of the film is inspired by ancient tribal symbols, which constantly morph into each other. They represent life in a womb-like frame.

Wendy Tilby's Tables of Content was her graduation film from the Emily Carr College of Art and Design, Vancouver in 1986. The movie transports one into another era, an earlier age of gentility and reticence, set in a rather stuffy restaurant during the day.
