The Orchid

Viet Flakes was composed from an obsessive collection of Vietnam atrocity images, compiled over five years, from foreign magazines and newspapers. Schneemann uses the 8mm camera to “travel” within the photographs, producing a volatile animation.

At the center are takes which do not change - a tree in a field in Vermont, U.S.A. Since the film was shot over a period of fifty days, the single frame shots create a storm of pictures.

A ritual of grids, reflections and chasms; a complete state of entropy; a space that devours itself; a vertigo that destroys the gravity of the Earth; a trap that captures us inside the voids of the screen of light: «That blank arena wherein converge at once the hundred spaces» (Hollis Frampton).

"The Pig and the Society," symbolizes the stark contrast between the excesses of wealth and the plight of those left behind. It invites viewers to reflect on their perceptions and prejudices, challenging them to see beyond the surface and understand the systemic issues perpetuating homelessness.

Through a visceral exploration of digital distortion and failing verification processes, this challenges your perception and dares you to question what lies beneath the surface. Are we truly awake to the genocides and wars raging beyond our privileged bubbles, or are we content to remain ensnared by manipulated realities? This is a personal call to shatter the illusions, to seek deeper truths, and to recognize the profound fortune of our existence amidst global turmoil.

In 2017, a short anime film called Hypersonic Music Club was produced in Japan. It was directed and written by Osamu Kobayashi, a veteran of the industry who passed away in April 2021. For various reasons, this short anime was never released. It was made public on August 1, 2023.

I also appreciate how spirituality manifests itself in Asian cultures as this almost earthbound presence guiding people through every day life and when they need an extra bit of help they need only ask whichever deity holds dominion over their desire. A girl trapped in a time loop leaves an AI replica to relive her final days. Glitches and burned-in subtitles reveal the machine’s fractured view, until the loop shifts to the real her — blurring the line between memory, code, and consciousness. "Told from the memory stream of a trapped A.I., the film visually glitches as it attempts to 'escape,' including encoded flashes of an 'ESC' key."

X (a Japan-set creature feature that was written by Ed Wood) and THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE (the savage body horror film that inspired FRANKENHOOKER) as a late-nite, home-taped double feature—complete with local TV commercials and a new synthesizer score from Taken by Savages (JUNGLE TRAP). Inspired by hazy memories of channel-surfing at the witching hour, this is a nostalgic and experimental art project from the minds behind Bleeding Skull.
