While in Europe, Chaddie Green, a society girl, discovers that she has been left penniless. She returns to the United States and meets Duncan MacKail, who is equally broke though he owns grainland in the West. Duncan and Chaddie are married and go west to homestead. When business takes Duncan away, Chaddie goes to take care of Percy Woodhouse, an Englishman who has become ill at his place fifteen miles away. Her horse runs away, and she is forced to spend the night there. She sleeps under a wagon, but Duncan is nevertheless angry and jealous.

Jeff Fulton jealous and bitter because his partner John Acton’s daughter Mary loves their neighboring claim holder, Dick Carew schemes to eliminate both men by fabricating a land dispute between them. Not satisfied with the result Fulton forges a challenge and sets up a duel in Buzzard Gulch for the men. Fulton ambushes Acton, wounding him. Carew arrives later, and after a staged exchange of gunfire with Fulton, is led to believe he has killed Acton. Fulton alerts the sheriff, leading to Carew's arrest based on circumstantial evidence. Mary uncovers the forged challenge, revealing Fulton's plot. Fulton is tricked into confessing his guilt, arrested, and sent to prison. Carew is freed, reuniting with Mary.

When The Man wanders in and wins at poker The Brute tries to fleece him of his winnings but loses everything when suddenly The Man catches sight of The Woman. He offers to stake his all on her and they play. The Man has four of a kind. The Brute has a gun. But The Man is a quicker draw and the pair escape across the desert. The Brute follows but when he is defeated in a showdown he wanders off into the desert to perish. The Man and The Woman embark on a new life.

After being imprisoned for the crime, Jack manages to escape. In a series of high-action sequences—including a spirit-filled defense of a cabin and a stagecoach holdup—Jack saves Anna and a stash of gold. Jack's name is eventually cleared when the true villain provides a confession, proving his innocence.

Gold miner Edd Denmeade loves Lucy Watson, the sister of the official mining claim recorder. Denmeade suspects Watson of killing his father, who after a poker game was shot by a gambler "who shuffles with one hand." The real murderer, Sam Spralls, has convinced Watson that he killed Denmeade and threatens to expose him unless Watson assigns him all the gold claims. Spralls assembles a band of killers to jump the claims when Watson complies. Eventually, Denmeade learns the identity of the killer when he sees Spralls shuffle a deck of cards. He forms a vigilante party and rids the community of Spralls and his gang.

Bart Carson is in love with Lou and even goes to jail to save Walter A. Walker, a man she says is her brother but who is really a husband who has deserted his wife and two children.
