Julie flees to the Haunted Rock cave after a fight between the brothers and is discovered there by American engineer Tom King and they fall in love. The brothers pursue and menace the couple but infighting leads to ruin for both and the young couple embark on life together.

She soon becomes the favorite of the King and Jean du Barry becomes a regular around the court too. But all this is disturbed when Madame du Barry falls for Conte Brissac of the King's Guard. Jean du Barry's attempts to expose her affair only get him banished from the court.

Two women named Mary -- both recently sexually assaulted by the same man -- meet at the police station and enter into the world that victims of assault have to endure, guided by a police constable and his colleague. As the action unfolds, it is commented on by the Furies -- a chorus of murdered women seen and heard only by the viewer. Flashes of wit and humour temper a dark and difficult subject.
