At his father’s insistence Billy Drake heads to the family’s South American ammunition company as an emissary. An island girl there is in love with him, but when he refuses to reciprocate her love and returns to his old sweetheart, she chooses to commit suicide rather than marry one of her own kind.

John Nisheto, a Native American, saves Senator's son Jack Burr during World War I. Upon returning to the United States, John begins a relationship with Jack's sister, Agnes, despite Jack's initial objections due to John's ethnicity and his ignorance of John's heroic act.

Eventually he is shot and killed by his father, Ben, during a confrontation over the extortion attempt. In the end, Cameron collapses in grief, while Mary and her husband remain unaware of the dramatic events.
