During a raid on a gambling establishment run by her father, Cosmo Lester, Diana Lester rescues Hugh Carton, a member of the English Parliament and a candidate for the Cabinet. Hugh gratefully offers Diana a position as his sister's companion, and soon, the two fall desperately in love.

Two friends, Fritz and Theodor, make the acquaintance of Christine and Mizzi, who are also friends. Lawyer Hanover Priestley plots with his friend Henry Winkley to marry off young heiress Leila Calthorpe to Winkley's nephew, John Warren. When John refuses, preferring to select his own wife, they lure him east by a false report of Winkley's death. Indignant at his rebuff, Leila disguises herself as Perkins, a maid, and romances him, leading him to believe that Aunt Agatha is the heiress. Complications develop, and after saving her from a fire John discovers her identity and agrees to marry her.

Eve Orrin is at the mercy of her possessive mother, who has a case of "nerves" every time her daughter tries to show a mind of her own. Mrs. Orrin and her friend, Mrs. Marchant, have determined that Eve will marry Mrs. Marchant's milquetoast son, Henry, and Eve is willing to go along with it just to placate her mother. But Eve herself finally has an attack of nerves, and she falls in love with Doctor Harmon, the physician called in to care for her.

Barbara Winslow helps her rebel brother, Rupert, escape from the king's forces by disguising herself as him. Captain Prothero captures her, but he has fallen for Barbara's charms so he lets her go. As a result they are both arrested and imprisoned.

Lyman enlisted with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders to fight in the Spanish-American War, but was killed in battle.

Detective Ruby Swift is on the trail of crooked politicos McQuire and Olson and traces them to the small hamlet Hicktown. Once there she finds that they are attempting to steal the election of the mayor in order to “trim” the town. Ruby, as secretary to the politicians, causes both to fall in love with her, hoping their rivalry will part them and reveal the hidden ballot boxes. Jealous over Ruby, the politicians quarrel, and not even the suffragette Chief of Police can reconcile them. How Ruby takes advantage of the quarrel and brings them to justice is the climax of this five-reel comedy.

One Enjoyed, the Other Paid

Paul and Rhoda Remsen, having marital difficulties, separate; and each is awarded custody of their child Peggy for 6 months of the year. Rhoda and Peggy move to a farm town, while Paul remains in the big city to write a play for actress Inez Lamont, who is in love with him. Peggy knows that her mother still loves Paul, so she flees to the big city to explain the situation to her father.
