Will Lockhart arrives in Coronado, an isolated town in New Mexico, in search of someone who sells rifles to the Apache tribe, finding himself unwillingly drawn into the convoluted life of a local ranching family whose members seem to have a lot to hide.

Commissioner Bartošek is visited by Dr. Goldberg, who reports the disappearance of his friend, the famous actor Benda. From the flimsy evidence, it appears that Benda left his apartment one night without taking anything with him and was taken away by car. He had not gone out for the entire week before, had not washed, had not shaved, and had drunk until he was debauched. The police search has reached a dead end. The actor Lebduška reveals to Goldberg that Benda had an affair with the actress Gréta, the wife of a prominent businessman, Bartošek's classmate Korbel. Goldberg eventually manages to exhume an unknown vagrant, whose body was found shortly after Benda's disappearance...

In 1800, as Napoleon Bonaparte rises to power in France, a rivalry erupts between Armand and Gabriel, two lieutenants in the French Army, over a perceived insult. For over a decade, they engage in a series of duels amidst larger conflicts, including the failed French invasion of Russia in 1812, and shifts in the political and social systems of Europe.

A young couple lives in a shared apartment with their grandmother, who constantly interferes in their lives. They can't do anything on their own, they can't even be alone in intimate moments. The son-in-law decides to "get rid" of his grandmother and diligently reads dating ads. Finally, under the pretext of buying a canary, he takes his grandmother to a gamekeeper's lodge, where a lonely gamekeeper lives, longing for company. However, the grandmother sees through the ruse. A story set in Tsarist Russia, set in a manor house. The main character is the mute Gerasim, who lives in a touching friendship with his dog Mumu. The dramatic plot is based on the petty intrigues of people from his environment.
