The Fable of Elvira and Farina and the Meal Ticket is a 1915 silent film directed by Richard Foster Baker. Gloria Swanson made her first credited appearance in this film as Farina.

Gloria, the daughter in a wealthy family, has finally spent most of her father's money. She marries Tony, whose as much of a reckless spendthrift as she is, and they continue indulging themselves. Tony's wealthy grandfather Adam Patch dies, but to their surprise he leaves Tony nothing. The couple try their hands at actually working for a living, but they don't like it and return to their spendthrift ways. Something has to give, and it soon does.

Brick Hubbard, a "printer's devil", convinces his friend Sid Fletcher to invest in "The Gazette", a local newspaper. Sid pens an editorial that infuriates Ira Gates, a local banker and a power in the town--and who also happens to be the father of Vivian Gates, whom Sidney is in love with. To complicate matters, the bank is robbed and Sidney is suspected of the crime.

Barry Baline, a guard at a subway station, has worked at his job for six years without a day off. One New Year's Eve he's told that he won't be needed until the next morning, so he decides to go out for a night on the town. A scout for the Los Angeles Angels professional baseball team offers Specs a contract. He accepts, but only so he can use the money he gets to work on his invention. However, Specs has a secret he dare not tell anyone--he's scared to death of large crowds. Alice Hobbs, the young, pretty owner of the Angels, tries to help him with that problem, but a misunderstanding causes another problem. this time between Specs and Alice.

Bernice Randall, who has forsaken the love of her sweetheart, Tom Richards, to marry for wealth, turns down Richards' proposal after the death of her husband, and she is denounced by him as a slave to silver. Lavishing the greater part of her fortune on her daughter, Janet, Bernice determines to give her the advantages she herself lacked. Despite her mother's disapproval, Janet scorns the affection of Larry Martin, a life-long friend, after meeting Philip Caldwell, a wealthy sophisticate. Worried over Janet's growing attachment to Philip, Bernice determines to win Caldwell from her daughter, and in a confrontation involving the girl and Richards, now a millionaire, Janet is disillusioned in her mother and Caldwell. Learning of her mother's sacrifice, Janet forgives her and finds happiness with Larry.

Sonny Boy's parents are in the midst of a bitter divorce when the boy's mother talks her sister into kidnapping him because she is terrified that her husband will take the boy out of the country after the divorce.

Albert Whalen, a hotel elevator operator, together with one of the pretty chambermaids, Annie Jackson, on the hotel staff are accused of breaking and entering a suite belonging to one of the guests, Mr. Cleaver. They are caught in the suite, but unexpected circumstances caused them to be there. Their explanations are not believed. A lost film.

When the painter Christopher Bean dies, some unscrupulous art dealers try to get several of his paintings cheaply from a family who have no idea of their value.

Perscilla (Zasu Pitts) holds the mortgage on Milt's (Milburn Morante) home but says she will cancel it if Milt will make his son, Ebbie (Billy Franey), marry her. Ebbie refuses and is thrown out. He goes to the big city, saves a banker from being robbed by thugs in a park, and is given a many-jobs job in the bank. He meets and falls in love with Lillian (Lillian Peacock), the banker's daughter. In his night-watchman/janitor job he keeps a gang of safe-crackers from cleaning out the bank, is given a big reward and marries Lillian. He then returns home to spurn Perscilla, pays off the mortgage and demands the best room in the house for he and his bride.

The story opens with an old couple in the evening of life, sitting by the fireside reminiscing the happenings of their younger days. How the young man had left his country home to seek work in the great city, and after many days of wandering had found employment as an office boy in the same office with the young lady. How she had taken an interest in him and before many days had become more than friends.

Sweedie, the cook, reads an ad in the newspaper for a maid to give her services in exchange for college tuition. She applies and is accepted.
