Wastrel New York millionaire Roland Van Dam travels to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, looking for adventure and romance. Because the costume he is wearing includes a red gardenia, he is mistaken for escaped prisoner Emile Le Duc by a woman (who turns out to be a long-lost cousin) who was to meet Le Duc, who was to be wearing a red gardenia. It turns out that Le Duc is the head of a vicious gang of counterfeiters, and Roland winds up getting in more adventures than he had hoped for.

A group of men shows the 'before and after' physical effects of a journey upon the Mount Aspiring area. Mount Aspiring (9,960 ft.), known as the Matterhorn of New Zealand, together with Mount French, mark the end of the Otago and Westland regions. The movie does not show scenes of the climbing itself, but collects the testimonies of the members of the group, led by Jack Aitken. The other members are Bill Young, Stewert J. Macdonald, Victor Bowden, and Roland Ellis.

1917 Favraux, a corrupt banker, is blackmailed by the mysterious Judex, who forces him to confront the consequences of his crimes; the stage is set for the conflict over Favraux’s fortune and family.

Little Jean befriends the Licorice Kid, while Diana and Moralès kidnap Jacqueline and Judex continues holding Favraux prisoner.

Judex uses his dogs to track Jacqueline, rescues her from a villa, and deeper hints emerge that he is falling in love with her.

Diana’s gang exhumes Favraux’s tomb, Jacqueline is endangered again, and Pierre Kerjean’s connection to the whole affair becomes more important.

Jacqueline is taken to an old mill, Moralès is exposed as Kerjean’s son, and Judex continues protecting Jacqueline in secret.

Diana and de la Rochefontaine target Little Jean, but Judex and Roger intervene and reunite Jean with Jacqueline.
