A Mexican upper-class family suffers a great loss. After a while everyone seems to go on with their lives. But after 11 years, everyone will start to remember that tragedy and start the road to depression and self-pity, and possible self-destruction.

The attack on a popular singer known as Pachito -who becomes the favorite candidate to win the presidential election in an imaginary Latin American country- is the starting point of several stories, including: the alleged murderer, a police officer investigating the disappearance of the murdered body and an architect hired to design the mausoleum to the memory of the possible dictator.

After working for three years in the USA, Filiberto returns to his home town in Mexico. A proud man, he is searching for the recognition that will give him a new position in life. However, he finds that things have changed. His mother is dead, and Luis, his best friend, is married to his ex-girlfriend. Filiberto gets involved in the town’s disputes over a water spring.

In an unnamed Latin American country that closely resembles Mexico, the government fights a rural insurgency with torture, assault, rape, and murder. Soldiers descend on a town, cutting off the rebels from their cache of ammunition hidden in a field. A family of grandfather, son, and grandson are among the rebels in the hills. The grandfather, with his violin over his shoulder, tries to pass the checkpoint, ostensibly to tend his corn crop. The commanding officer lets him pass but insists on a daily music lesson.

At the close of a special day, family ties are shown to be fragile before the shared feeling concerning an important abscence when the sensation of absence. Uncle Manuel, a very peculiar man is determined to help his sibling's adolescent children and his brother-in-law, an unemployed union leader. Mom's house has now become a place where the family could vanish due to a world of broken dreams.

Hugo and Julia are two high school students that have different dreams and goals. Their lives take different paths learning that in this life, everything has a price, and everyone has to pay his own.
