This is the story of a young woman named Sita, who is engaged to a college professor. Rakesh, a spoilt rich brat comes across Sita one day and falls in love with her but Sita does not love him.

Young Seema lives a middle-classed lifestyle along with her grandmother and maternal uncle, Kamdev. She is friendly with Rajesh, and another young boy, Sanjay, also wants to be her friend, but she rejects him. Then the region is devastated by floods and she is separated from Rajesh. Years later, Seema has grown up and much to her delight gets re-united with Rajesh. Her grandmother happily arranges their marriage. On the day of the marriage, a beautiful young woman, Prema, along with a young child in her arms, stops the marriage, claiming that Rajesh is already married to her and is the father of her child. Naive, simple-minded, and illiterate Bhaskar Sarnaik (Amitabh Dayal) comes to Bombay from his far-off village, to look for his missing brother, Raghuvir. He comes in contact with Sub-Inspector Gokhale (Om Puri), who feels sorry for him, and not only offers to find his brother, but also employment at an Irani Restaurant. Bhaskar does find his brother - in the morgue - but decides not to tell his mother as this may break her heart. He decides to stay on in Bombay and undergoes training to become a police officer. A short time later he is also a Sub-Inspector working closely with Gokhale. He is wounded in an encounter, and his mother comes to look after, and gets him to marry Aditi (Nandita Das) from the same village, which Bhaskar does so.

Pancham's love interest, Monica, receives an offer of astronomical proportions to be the 'item' in a dance number at a New Year party. This gala event is thrown by a liquor king's right hand Kamachi. To add to the chaos, the king falls in love with Monica. Meanwhile, a channel is trying to do sting operation during their New Year party to prove involvement of a politician in the liquor king's illegal business. The journalist disguises herself as Monica to record the underhand deals. Kamachi realises that Monica is an impostor and starts looking for her, sparking off a hilarious and complex sequence of events.
