Shot in downtown Minneapolis, Rush Light assembles a rapid montage of fleeting street compositions. Through quick cuts and sudden shifts, Devereaux creates a collage of ready-made visual moments—buildings, signs, shadows, and chance alignments glimpsed in passing. The film operates as both a study of three-dimensional space and a meditation on the eye’s ability to seize upon images in a split second. Color, light, and shadow flicker across the frame, transforming the city into a shifting field of accidental design.

Drawn again from footage shot in the Torrance Public Library parking lot, Introduction to Crack Sealing 3 remixes material from the first two films into a new visual texture. Where the earlier works traced and fractured the asphalt lines, this version overlays them through double exposures that randomly overlap and fade in and out. The result is a shifting, layered surface in which gestures collide, blur, and dissolve, creating a cracked field of inscription.

On this day, I am in an oncology center, 6 days since having my tumor removed, and in the afternoon my partner ends our relationships. Blending memory and theory, this autofiction documentary unfolds the relationships between love(s) and catastrophes.

Co-directed by Max Devereaux and Igor Amokian, MD+IA=? is a sonic and visual collage that fuses circuit-bent electronics, broken tape loops, glitching drum machines, and free-improvised guitar. Amokian’s footage of modified CRT televisions generating unruly abstractions is layered with Devereaux’s processed iPhone videos, altered through datamoshing and glitch-editing apps. The result is a vivid collision of sound and image—a colorful flux of patterns and distortions where technology’s failures become raw material for improvisation.

A reframing of the classic tale of Narcissus, the director draws on snippets of conversation with a trusted friend to muse on gender and identity. Just as shimmers are difficult to grasp as knowable entities, so does the concept of a gendered self feel unknowable except through reflection. Is it Narcissus that Echo truly longs for, or simply the Knowing he possesses when gazing upon himself?

Alinur, a student filmmaker, tries to make a film about the apocalypse for his capstone project. The movie itself happens to be about a mercenary named M who inadvertently causes an apocalypse. As he tries to “create” the destruction of this supposed apocalypse through utilizing technical gimmicks that he has enforced onto the production of the film, this supposed effort also creeps in as a force that starts to “destroy” him, piece by piece. The outcome of it tests the sincerity of not only the film itself but also of the performative efforts that Alinur has made as a filmmaker—even this test might not be as sincere as it seems.

In a leafy forest, a Galician sovereign who longs to attain wisdom meets a sorcerer, who tells him: “Go back to your country and study the Earth and the Stars in the sky; anywhere in the world reflects an image of it. Odds & Ends is a sly comment on the collage film and Beat culture. To discarded travel and advertising footage found at a local film laboratory, Belson Shimane added a mélange of animation—assemblages, cutouts, color fields, and line drawings—and faux hipster narration by Jacobs (credited via the anagram Rheny Bojacs) punctuated by a bongo backing. Strung together with doublespeak and non sequiturs, the monologue skirts the edge of nonsense as Jacobs waxes on about poetry, jazz, “reaching the public,” “having a good time,” and—although “money doesn’t count”—the “possibility of subsidy” through grants. Footage of champagne, tropical beaches, and exotic peoples intermingle with rhythmic drawings and stop-motion flights of fancy. The visuals race on through dazzling transformations, both amplifying and undercutting the patter. —National Film Preservation Foundation.
