In the film about "the land of eternal light and eternal darkness" we meet some women who talk about their lives. The women have all grown up in reindeer herding families and as children they lived in kotas, moved with reindeer and lived a life in nature. Their own children, on the other hand, have grown up in "normal" Swedish society. None of them have lived like their parents. The film addresses Sami culture, language, school. How modern technology has affected the lives of the Sami.

Elle Marja, 14, is a reindeer-breeding Sami girl. Exposed to the racism of the 1930s and phrenological examinations at her boarding school, she starts dreaming of another life. To achieve this other life she has to become someone else and break all ties with her family and culture.

A young girl adores her late father. Obsessed with every little detail of how he was she envisions his clothes, hands, face, behavior and actions. An accidental meeting triggers doubt in her love for her father.

A drama about the manager Håkan Dahlin who has just been discharged from a clinic where he was treated for his alcoholism. In an outbreak of jealousy, Dahlin abuses his wife Inga and after that he is forcibly interned again. Inga is a nurse and she is now moving to a mountain village to work at a district clinic. During an emergency visit, she encounters her childhood sweetheart, the doctor Gunnar, and old feelings between them begin to flare up again.

A woman returns home to her father and childhood home, after being gone for over 20 years. Her purpose for the visit is to deliver the message that her fathers former wife has passed away.

Lapland, Sweden. The Sami Arvi wants to marry young Aino but her mother will not give her permission as long as Arvi does not have a herd of 400 reindeer. The only one who has reindeer to sell is the rich Oula, but he wants to marry Aino as well. The only way for Arvi to get the animals is buying them from Norway - but this is highly illegal.
