CE QUE CACHE LA FORÊT (What the Forest conceals) explores the invisible inheritance we carry within us: that of the family unconscious passed down from generation to generation. Personalities as varied as psychologist Anne Ancelin Schützenberger, systemic therapist Bert Hellinger and artist Alexandro Jodorowsky have, each in their own way, revealed the existence of these unresolved stories that profoundly influence our lives. Today, epigenetic research confirms that trauma can mark our genome, and be passed on beyond those who experienced it. But how do these memories get inscribed in us? How can they be recognized, overcome and healed? Filmmaker Louis Mouchet shares his own journey through this deeply personal film. This documentary from 1980 depicts a factory community in China where over 6000 workers process, spin and weave raw cotton into 90 million yards of high-quality cloth per year. Also seen are the workers' residential, social, recreational and educational facilities, all located on factory property. The story puts İlhan Çomak at the center, even though he is not physically present in the film. It focuses on the 21 years that İlhan spent in prison and his family’s experience of those years without him. The narrative is constructed through the letters İlhan wrote and aims to describe his life, his emotions and longings. The film constructs İlhan’s history through a chronology in the prison but refrains from restricting it only to a “prisoner’s quest for justice”, and rather tells a story of the situations he finds himself in over the years and his emotions and their equivalents in life.
