March On, America!

A formal 1861 portrait of a Chinese Mandarin and his wife is the starting point for this allegorical investigation of the fantasies spawned in the West about the East, particularly that which associates femininity with the mysterious Orient. ADYNATA presents a series of oppositions-male and female images, past and present sounds-which in and of themselves construct a minimal and fragmentary narrative, an open text of our imaginations, fears and fantasies.

During the Revolutionary War, Emily, her daughter Sarah and her two young grandchildren have to look after themselves and run the family farm while the men fight for the patriots' cause. With winter approaching, crops dwindling and food shortages mounting, the women face their greatest fears when three lost British soldiers storm into their house demanding food, drink and anything else they can get their hands on.

A young, unbelieving couple is being pursued by a terrifying monster. They try to hide in a church, where they meet a priest who seems friendly at first glance, but it soon becomes clear that the priest has less than honorable plans for them. They are trapped.

To give greater authenticity to what is happening on the screen, the shooting was carried out on black-and-white negatives of 16 and 35 mm, hand-operated cameras were used and the material was developed in manual spiral tanks. The documentary chronicle of the Kolchak army of 1919 and the White army in the Far East of 1922 is embedded in the finale of the film.

The genuine steam locomotive and coaches were all hand built by Tommy in his garage workshop, and he maintained and operated the railway with his family.
