Pygmalion’s Ugly Season

Set beneath a surreal green sky on a distant, crumbling world, the film captures the last survivors of a dying civilization—women who perform a synchronized ritual dance to summon an ethereal extraterrestrial presence from another realm.

After concluding the now-legendary public access TV series, The Pain Factory, Michael Nine embarked on a new and more subversive public access endeavor: a collaboration with Scott Arford called Fuck TV. Whereas The Pain Factory predominantly revolved around experimental music performances, Fuck TV was a comprehensive and experiential audio-visual presentation. Aired to a passive and unsuspecting audience on San Francisco’s public access channel from 1997 to 1998, each episode of Fuck TV was dedicated to a specific topic, combining video collage and cut-up techniques set to a harsh electronic soundtrack. The resultant overload of processed imagery and visceral sound was unlike anything presented on television before or since. Features the band Cherry Pit performing the second half of their song "I AM NOT A PERSON", set against unlicensed footage from other trans filmmakers, including the likes of Lex Walton, Louise Weard, Cate Wurtz, Jane Schoenbrun and Lily Alexandre.

Artefacts from the golden times of small gauge amateur film take centre stage: Ready-made film transitions from the 1970’s and 80’s, short, colourful patterns and animations for the ambitious hobby film maker to be intercut into their home movies. This project brings these forgotten pieces of film culture back to life and celebrates their opulent aesthetics in a stereoscopic film projection. It pumps, jumps, slides, and distorts the reference points of our languid brains. A trip!

Set against a vibrant tapestry of music and movement, Tem Fé poetically explores female energy, resilience, and ancestral roots. Through striking visuals and soundscapes, the film celebrates the strength of women and their spiritual bond across generations.

Co-directors Lilith Piper and Joya Berrow capture the movements and migration patterns of birds, translating their seasonal journey through dance. Passing through blog graveyards, broken hyperlinks, and digital spirits, they begin to realize the Internet is so much more. Lost websites, anon forums, and inexplicable pixels singing to a prepubescent soul. An ode to the 2000s webpage and flash game culture.
